Why the Traditional Method Fails Under Exam Pacing
⏱ Takes ~2 to 2.5 Mins• The Equation Trap: Students jump into mechanical algebra: 1/x + 1/15 = 1/6, finding common denominators (30) and solving fractions.
• The Time Cost: In Data Sufficiency, you are not asked for the numerical value—only sufficiency. Solving the arithmetic burns 90 precious seconds on zero additional points.
• The Degree Calculation Trap: Standard formulas convert the 8:48 time to degrees: Minute hand at 288°, Hour hand at 264° (gap = 24°). Then 50% increase = 12° extra gap.
• The Fraction Division Trap: Relative speed = 5.5°/min. Time = 12 / 5.5 = 12 / (11/2) = 24/11 mins. Dividing mixed decimals and fractions under CAT pressure causes frequent mental arithmetic blunders.
• The Multiplication Trap: Students compute 20% of $170 ($34), add it ($204), then calculate 20% of $204 ($40.80), subtracting to get $163.20. Then repeat for Column B ($170 - $17 = $153 + $15.30 = $168.30).
• The Time Cost: Tedious pencil calculations waste 2 minutes on a simple conceptual question.
• The Full Expansion Trap: Multiplying out the RHS: 2ax² + 2bx + 3ax + 3b, grouping like terms, setting up three simultaneous equations, and solving.

The Sharp Minds Logical Bypass
⏱ Solved in ~30 to 45 Secs• Step 1 (Variable Sufficiency): We have 2 unknowns (Rate X and Rate Y). To determine X, we only need unique equations locking both.
• Step 2 (Instant Visual Match): Statement (1) provides Y alone. Combined with X + Y = 6 hrs, X is locked automatically. Statement (2) simply restates the prompt (2/3 in 4 hrs = 1 in 6 hrs) adding no new information. Answer: A alone is sufficient. Zero arithmetic calculated.
• Step 1 (Relative Motion Ratio): Every 12 minutes, the minute hand moves 12 min marks while the hour hand moves 1 min mark. The gap changes by 11 minutes for every 12 minutes of real time.
• Step 2 (Instant Gap Scaling): At 8:48, minute hand is at 48. Hour hand is 4 min past 8 (44-min mark). Current gap = 4 minutes. A 50% increase requires a 2-minute gap change.
• Direct Answer: 1 min gap change = 12/11 mins. Therefore, a 2 min gap change = 2 × (12/11) = 24/11 minutes. Solved in 40 seconds without any degree calculations!
• Step 1 (Baseline Shift): Since starting price ($170) is identical, discard it completely and use an intuitive base of $100.
• Step 2 (Symmetry Logic): Symmetric swings always yield a net loss equal to (x/10)²%. A 20% swing = -4% loss ($96). A 10% swing = -1% loss ($99). Column B is immediately greater in 5 seconds flat.
• Step 1 (Inspect the Constant Term): The only terms that multiply to create the constant 12 on the LHS are 3 and b.
• Step 2 (Instant Coefficient Match): 3 × b = 12 ➔ b = 4. Choice C is locked in 10 seconds without expanding polynomials!
